Abstract: | With his simple line drawings and fine eye for detail, the French artist Crafty has left us with a clear and often humorous record of the equestrian world at the end of the 19th century. He used Paris as his canvas, where the English influence has led to a high prominence of equestrian activities in the lifestyle of the wealthy. Romantic and sentimental, but also trenchant and malicious, Crafty's drawings follow the footprints of Parisian high society around the turn of the century. In addition to his high artistic skill, Crafty had extensive knowledge of the world of horses and carriages, and he was also a kieen observer of human nature. This book represents a selection of his finest drawings and hopes to bring them to the attention of a German and English speaking readership. His wicked sense of humour is present both in the drawings and in the accompanying texts, a key source for the commentaries by Andres Furger. Crafty's pen captures elegant ladies on horseback in the park as well as four-in-hand coaches. The artist's characteristic humour is present throughout the book : once he is attacking the disproportionate display of wealth by the 'nouveau riche', another time his target is the chic courtesan, or he pokes fun at the weak riders to hounds. A day in the life of a metropolis shortly before 1900 can be experienced as if it was yesterday. At daybreak, a lady of doubtful reputation is on the way home in her brougham, the stable servants are grooming the horses, the merchants are bringing their new horses out on the empty streets and the early risers are mounting their horses for morning exercise. After the activities of early morning, Crafty proceeds with a portrayal of the events in the city park, where Paris, young 'jet set' congregates before noon. An excursion to the race-tracks in the outskirts follows. Subsequently, the return to the city is catured complete with its many accidents, illustrated by Crafty with his typically English wit. Finally, one sees the many riders trotting back to the stables, the lanterns being lit on the carriages, and a long line of boble equipages making their way back to the large town houses. |
