Résumé : | The non therapeutic administration of inorganic cobalt is considered as blood doping since it enhances crythropietic response. Its misuse in equine athletes has been reported. Cobalt is an essential mineral micronutrient and is naturally present at low concentrations in biological samples. Administration of Vit B12 (cobalt-containing vitamin) is recommended for treating Vit B12 deficiencies. Vit B12 is also present in nutritional supplements. Their use is important to maintain the oxidant/antioxidant balance which is beneficial in preparing athletic horses for a stress or an effort. In order to control the misuse of cobalt, it is necessary to establish an international threshold for cobalt in plasma and/or in urine. An international collaboration has been initiated between five laboratories : the Racing Laboratory of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, University of Caliborniaés Laboratory (USA), Racing Chemistry Laboratory (Western Australia), LGC (UK) and LCH (France). A ring test has been conducted in plasma and in urine. A good degree of harmonization was observed for the analysis in urine. From the present data, 100 ng/mL of otal cobalt in urine seems to be an acceptable threshold value on race day, banning any race day administration of cobalt containing supplements especially those administrered IV and IM. A higher degree of harmonization has to be reached before the determination of a threshold value in plasma. |
