Résumé : | The spread of anthelmintic resistance in equine strongyle nematodes has become a majour problem, creating an urgent need to develop alternatives for strongyle control. Knowledge on pathophysiological prodesses associated with nematode infections points to the hypothesis taht the host's ability to responjd to strongyles could be improved by feed complementatino, particularly with proteins that are likely to be limiting factors of the diet. Another alternative is the control of strongyles via bioactive forages ike sainfoin containing plant secondary metaboiltes such as tannins. Both strategies have proven anthelmintic effects in several studies on small ruminants (Houdijk et al. 2000, Brunet et al. 2007). In equids, only two in vitro studies have recently analyzed the influence of different plant extracts and reported a significant efffect against strongyle for a numner of them (Payne et al. 2013, Peachez et al. 2015). Therefore, the current study aims to i) evaluate the efficacy of a short-term consumption of either extra proteins or sainfoin by horses to reduce faecal egg excretion in naturally-infected horses and ii) analyze the in vitro influence of secondary metabolites of sainfoin on strongyle eff hatching and larval developement. |
