Résumé : | A snaffle bit, made of copper alloy and iron, found at Lochlea crannóg in 1878 has no direct parallel in the Scottish archaeological record. It has previously considered Iron Age, but a re-assessment of the site indicates it is more likely to have been made during the early medieval period, most likely the sixth century AD. Its unusual construction also illustrates how the earlier and problematic triple-link bits of the first and second centuries AD fitted. The design of the snaffle, with its mixture of equestrian cultural influences, poses questions about identities and hybrid technology in the face of a changing society. |
